Turmeric – an anti-inflammatory powerhouse
This simple flowering plant from the Indian subcontinent should be relatively well-known to anyone familiar with superfoods, heart disease prevention, and Alzheimer’s prevention. We already covered the link between diabetes and Alzheimer’s[32] and turmeric plays right into that. This spice is probably best-known for giving curry its yellow-orange color but it has much more to offer.
Turmeric contains a lot of medicinal compounds called curcuminoids, the most important of which is curcumin. The herb also has anti-inflammatory properties, it’s a powerful antioxidant, and most importantly – it boosts the brain’s neurotropic factor, thus improving the brain’s function[33,34]. Curcumin has also been shown to improve the endothelial function and thus – lower the risk of heart diseases[35,36].
