Everyone’s favorite celebrity physician, Dr. Mehmet Oz, shares the following seven tips for health and wellness, based on his own personal practice.
1. Stretch Regularly
Daily stretching can help you relax, strengthen your muscles, and increase flexibility in your joints to prevent pain and injury. Yoga is one popular way of getting in a guided stretch, but you really only need a few minutes – Dr. Oz recommends seven – of stretching to reap its benefits. Not sure where to get started? Here’s a brief “how to” on increasing flexibility with stretching.
2. Eat Protein-Filled Snacks
Snacks packed with lean protein can help satisfy your afternoon cravings while also giving you an energy boost without tons of carbs or sugar, which can send you on a blood sugar roller coaster. Consider bringing some nuts, sliced turkey, or cheese to work with you to nibble on when hunger hits.
3. Get Enough Vitamin D and Omega-3
In combination with Vitamin D, Omega-3 fatty acids can help improve cardiovascular health and lower levels of blood triglycerides. Omega-3s may also play a role in preventing a whole range of medical issues, from asthma to Alzheimer’s. You can find Omega-3s in fatty fish, flax, and nuts, and can also supplement your diet with a fish oil plus Vitamin D capsule on a daily basis.
4. Take Time to Breathe
Constant stress can up your risk for heart issues and may also cause you to gain weight (or might make it harder for you to lose weight).
A few times a day, pause what you’re doing and take a few deep, full breaths for relaxation. You’ll not only feel more centered and able to complete tasks at hand, but you’ll also lower your risk of cardiovascular problems.
