Environmental Risks

At this point the majority of arguments against AquaAdvantage salmon is one of environmental footprints.

There is a potential for environmental risk in breeding these fish and this concern has scientific evidence to back it up.

Should these GE salmon escape and mate with those in the wild it may further shrink the natural gene pool which is already at risk.

Many entities have publicly rebuked the FDA’s approval of GE salmon, such as the Center for Food Safety (CFS) and the Environmental Working Group (EWG).

“The decision to approve GMO salmon without a mandatory disclosure is yet another example of how FDA’s outdated policy keeps consumers in the dark,” explains Scott Faber, executive director of Just Label It.

Consumers Should Have The RIGHT To Choose!

While the CFS has plans to take legal action against the FDA specifically for this approval, it is not immediately clear on what grounds it plans to sue.

Given the current circumstances it would make sense for consumers to have the right to know and to choose whether they want to consume GM fish. However, that isn’t the case.

“Consumers will have no way of knowing whether the salmon they are buying comes from nature or comes from a lab.”

Apparently, letting buyers decide what they want to eat isn’t an option. For now, anyways.
