Not All Bad
Haub didn’t limit himself to “bad” foods either. He also ate a multivitamin pill, drank a protein shake, and included vegetables like green beans or celery to keep a healthy dose of vegetables in his otherwise unhealthy diet. Even before the diet, Haub stuck to a healthy diet, including fruits and vegetables, though as Haub said, “I was eating healthier, but I wasn’t healthy. I was eating too much.”
The Results
Haub started with a BMI (or body mass index) of 28.8 – overweight, according to the index – to 24.9, which is considered average. At the end of the diet, he weighted a trim 174 pounds, slimming down. In addition, his good cholesterol (HDL) rose 20 percent and his bad cholesterol (LDL) fell 20 percent, with his triglycerides, another type of fat, falling by 39 percent. Overall, the diet didn’t have a negative impact on his health, though it calls into question what some consider “healthy.”
Is This Worth Trying?
The Twinkie diet is likely not for everyone, with even Haub disavowing it for anything more than an experimental trial. Haub himself dismissed the idea of trying something like his diet on a long-term basis. But, is it even worth it to try with Twinkies gone? Well, good news:
Twinkies Aren’t Gone Forever, Just on Hiatus
While some might be wondering about the relevance of this blog in light of Twinkie-maker Hostess filing for bankruptcy in November, there is still hope. Recent reports claim that Hostess will be splitting up and selling the various snack brands it makes as part of its liquidation, so be ready for the Twinkie to make a triumphant – and possibly waist-changing – return soon.
