How To Freeze Avocados
There are a few different techniques you can use when preserving avocados. If you don’t have an electric mixer, for example, you can use a manual, hand-held potato masher to crush the avocados into a smooth paste – it works just as well, even if it takes a few minutes longer.
The bags should be large enough to store all the mashed avocado – you can also press the mashed avocado into ice cube trays, making convenient tablespoon-sized portions of avocado to add to smoothies and other recipes.
Finally, if you prefer the flavor of limes with avocado over lemons, you can use lime juice to help preserve the color and texture of the avocado instead of lemon juice.
Here’s the basic steps to preserving avocados:
1. Slice the avocados in half and throw away the pits, then scoop the flesh off the peels.
2. Mash the avocados using an electric mixer or hand-held potato masher. Add the lemon juice and mix well until the mixture is a creamy, smooth substance.
3. Spoon the mixture into the bags, seal and slowly squeeze all the air out of the bags.
You should be able to freeze these bags for up to a year.
Using Frozen Avocado Preserves
Once you’ve thawed out your frozen avocado preserves, you’ll want to use them within 24 hours. Perhaps the most obvious use for them is guacamole, which is always a popular choice for parties or just for a healthy snack. But you can also use it in smoothies, spread it on toast, use it as baby food, and substitute it for butter or oil in cooking recipes.
