Historical Facts Behind Cancer Fighting Drugs Will Shock You

by Amy Morris

Some cancer drugs have been around since the 1940’s.

Even back then these drugs were administered to patients with cancer, and even though sometimes cancer cells were reduced – it was not long after the doctors realized these drugs also caused toxic side effects to certain parts of the body.

Are the drugs administered today to cancer patients any better? You might not think so after reading some of the most shocking facts behind cancer fighting drugs.

#1 Cancer Drugs Make Tumors More Aggressive

Research has emerged from the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centre in Boston that some cancer drugs, used alongside chemotherapy, have been found to kill patients who receive these treatments more quickly.

And most doctors still choose to ignore all the natural therapies on offer to treat cancer. Did I hear someone say crazy?!

#2 Chemo Can Cause Cancer

Some people feel that chemotherapy is an effective treatment against many cancers, but this treatment has also been found to pose a high risk of causing leukemia cancer to develop in some that have received it according to the University of Rochester Medical Centre.

This risk is even higher when a patient has taken chemotherapy drugs as well as radiation therapy. With the risk growing even more as the length of treatment increases or the dose of the drugs gets higher.

Weigh up the pro’s and con’s of all cancer treatments, and be sure to get unbiased advice as you don’t want to be faced with dealing with a completely new cancer after chemotherapy.

#3 New Prostate Cancer Drugs Could Cause Cancer To Return

Certain newly created drugs aimed treating prostate cancer may not be targeting the root cause of the disease, this was according to research published in Cell Death & Differentiation.

The study was carried out by scientists at the University of York who discovered that a process called ‘methylation’, previously thought to drive the development of cancer, occurs in cells that are already cancerous. This means that the therapies, namely drugs, aimed at reversing this process might not be effective against cancer stem cells, allowing the cancer to return.

The whole point of treatment should be to get rid of the cancer, not to encourage it to come back. This just sounds like madness.

#4 Chemotherapy Damages Healthy Cells

A recent ‘whoopsie’ published in the journal Nature Medicine accidentally discovered that chemotherapy damages healthy cells, causing them to secrete a protein that accelerates the growth of cancer tumors.

“WNT16B” is the name of this protein and is taken up by nearby cancer cells, which causes them to grow, invade, and importantly, resist subsequent therapy according to the co-author of the study Peter Nelson of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle.

This may well explain why so many doctors seem to fail to understand why chemotherapy ‘appears’ to work at first only for a lot of cancer tumors to grow more aggressively after receiving chemotherapy.

#5 Cancer Drugs Can Cause Long Term Side Effects

So not only is it bad enough developing cancer in the first place – but you may go on to develop some unwanted side effects from the treatment that is supposedly helping you to get better.

The drug ‘tamoxifen’ commonly given to women with breast cancer, has a high rate of causing mental fogginess in those that take it. Researchers at the University of Rochester Medical Center have also proven what what once reported to be anecdotal only.

The study team found that the breast cancer drug tamoxifen is actually toxic to cells of the brain and central nervous system which is what produces this mental fogginess similar to “chemo brain.”

Any one for a side order of mental fogginess with their cancer treatment? Didn’t think so. Come on doctors – cancer patients deserve better that that.
