3. Lime Juice and Sunlight
The Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University conducted a study of citrus fruit as a water purification method. When combined with a solar treatment method, lime juice effectively removed many harmful types of bacteria from water including E. Coli.
Bottom Line
Consider the at-home benefits of these recent studies. Contamination of public tap water—water that you think is safe to drink—is more common than you think. Consider the analysis of the Washington Post, who reported on rising levels of lead in Washington, D.C.’s water supply in a 2009 article.
The article references a 2009 study conducted at Virginia Tech that examined the high levels of lead in D.C. drinking water and resulting levels of lead in blood samples from children.
Researchers found that children in specific neighborhoods were being exposed to harmful lead from water that was contaminated by ground sources that seeped into old pipes. At home, you can use these water purification techniques to remove harmful heavy metals from your water.
How To Do It
Begin by peeling your apples and tomatoes or bananas and soak them in a rubbing alcohol solution.
Next, remove the peels and let them dry out.
Once completely desiccated, just put the peels (you can mince them) in a container of water and wait.
After a few hours, remove the peels from the water and it’s ready to drink.
Note: this method doesn’t remove pathogens from the water, just a wide variety of pollutants.
