What’s Your Headache Telling You?

How to Treat a Headache

For tension headaches, regular over the counter medications such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and acetaminophen will do the job. These will also help with migraines, but prescription medications will provide better relief.

For migraines, you should rest your eyes in a dark, quiet room; use compresses that are hot or cold; get a massage; or even try a small amount of caffeine. For cluster headaches, use preventative or acute medications, or inhale 100% oxygen with a mask.

Simple, fast remedies that do not include medication also work. You can relax and rest, use an ice pack, try dietary supplements, get some exercise, drink water, massage your pressure points, change your diet, or try a hot shower.

Migraines vs. Headaches

There are multiple reasons why migraines are distinct from typical headaches, with the most important being their symptoms besides headache.

They can cause nausea or vomiting as well as aura, which refers to visual disturbance, problems with communication, and poor motor function.

They last anywhere from four hours to many months. Migraines can be triggered by perfume, alcohol, weather change, bright light, and even chocolate.
