For many, the prospect of taking pharmaceuticals for the rest of their life is far from appealing, especially when you consider some of the side effects. That’s why increasing amounts of fibromyalgia sufferers are looking to medical cannabis to manage their symptoms.

A study found that one year of cannabis treatment improved pain, function, quality of life and cognitive function in patients with chronic pain (2).

In the case of fibromyalgia, many patients prefer taking medical marijuana to the acetaminophen, prescription pain relievers, antidepressants, and antiseizure medication they are typically prescribed (3). In fact, a “cannabis patch” has already been designed for these patients.

MedChewRx is a cannabis gum specifically conceived for fibromyalgia patients that contains 5mg of both CBD and THC, the active compound in marijuana.

Since smoking has a negative impact lung health and edibles can take a while to have an effect, chewing gum is a much quicker and safer option.

The gum’s compounds are absorbed by the soft tissues in the mouth, bypassing your liver for quick relief. Chewing gum also has the following benefits (4,5):

  • Neuroprotective and neurostimulatory effects on the mind
  • Stress relief
  • Stimulation of the cardiovascular system
  • Improvement of age-related cognitive decline

It’s also much more discrete and socially acceptable than smoking. It’s also more portable than CBD oil.

The Future of Marijuana Gum

Professor John Zajicek, who runs the marijuana gum clinical trials warns that it may be a while before the gum hits the market. Side-effects have been reported and are not well enough understood. It also lacks the lack of a “peak” high typical in traditional cannabis medicines.

Like any medicine, the gum will only be commercially available once it has been extensively tested and proven both safe and effective.

Current Cannabis Products

Current marijuana options for fibromyalgia sufferers include CBD hemp oil, which is low in the psychoactive THC compound also found in cannabis. It can be made at home or purchased in pure CBD-hemp oil form, diluted tinctures, capsules, and topicals (6).

Other options include smoking marijuana, which helps with chronic pain, insomnia, and more. It also allows for a more personalized treatment thanks to the many varieties of cannabis available only in bud form (7).

Lastly, marijuana-infused edibles, such as baked goods, drinks, spreads, and candies. Ingesting cannabis is better for your lungs and it’s much more potent (8).

Cannabis gum’s possibilities don’t end there: AXIM Biotechnologies, Inc., major investment company, and the University of British Columbia have entered into a Clinical Study Agreement (CSA) to start a clinical trial for its CanChew Plus® cannabidiol (CBD) chewing gum. This gum is specifically created to treat adult drug-induced psychosis, also called a “substance-induced psychotic disorder”(9).

The ethics board of the University will design the trial alongside Health Canada to test the gum, which contains 50mg CBD. This is just one example of how cannabis products can be used for a multitude of illnesses.
