2. Chronic Pain

Another category of illnesses that will cause insomnia by waking you up in the middle of the night are conditions that cause chronic pain.

These can include arthritis, fibromyalgia, and other diseases. Chronic pain will both make it difficult for you to fall asleep in the first place and often cause you to wake up in the night during a bad pain flare.

Unfortunately, depending on the type of pain you suffer from there’s no easy way to prevent these flare ups.

One possibility is to take a pain relieving medication prescribed to you immediately before going to bed, allowing it to last you through the night.

3. Acid Reflux

Acid reflux is another condition that can wake you up in the middle of the night due to pain. Your body’s peak time for acid production is from 10 pm to 2 am. This means that if you eat too close to bedtime, you will often experience acid reflux while you are sleeping.

The burning sensation can cause insomnia if the pain is so severe that it wakes you up. To avoid this situation, do not eat a big meal close to bedtime.
