The sad fact of it is that once you leave your teen years behind, your hair is inevitably going to start to thin.
The good news is, eating the right foods can help slow the hair loss process and keep your remaining hair as thick and shiny as it was in your youth.
Here are some healthy foods to eat to promote healthier, thicker hair:
Mineral deficiency can cause your hair to become thin and brittle, so it’s a good idea to stock up on foods that are rich in vitamins and minerals. More specifically, iron deficiency has been proven to cause hair loss (1). Spinach is a great source of both iron and vitamin A (2), which is a key player in skin health (3).
2. Greek Yogurt.
This thick, protein-rich food is full of vitamin B5 (4) , which helps improve blood flow to the scalp and stimulate hair growth (5). It can also help treat eczema-related hair loss.
You can also use greek yogurt as a conditioner:
- Tie an old towel around your neck to avoid staining your clothes.
- Apply natural greek yogurt into hair one spoonful at time.
- Comb yogurt through hair.
- Tie up and leave in for about 20 minutes to an hour.
- Rinse and style.
Salmon is chock full of omega-3 fatty acids – super important if an inflammatory condition is causing you to shed hair (6). You can get omega-3 fatty acids from natural sources, like salmon, mackerel, walnuts and sardines.
This tasty, exotic fruit is full of vitamin C, which promotes healthy, shiny hair. Oral supplementation with vitamin C has been found to improve hair growth in women with temporary hair thinning (7).
If your fingernails are feeling brittle, chances are your hair is too. Any number of conditions can cause this, but the good news is help isn’t far away – eggs are a natural source of biotin, a B vitamin which strengthens brittle hair and nails (8).
Super healthy, packed with fibre, and cheap, lentils are also a great source of folic acid (c). This vitamin helps to restore red blood cells (9). This is important for hair growth because red blood cells supply the skin and scalp with oxygen, which makes your hair healthy and strong.
For the same reason you’d eat more spinach, liver and other organ meats are absolutely packed with iron (10).
8. Lean Protein
If you’re not getting enough protein in your diet, your hair will notice – and react accordingly. A protein-deficient diet can cause hair loss (11). So getting lots of lean proteins in your diet is super important. Chicken, fish, and lean pork loin are all great options.
9. Sweet Potatoes

Look for orange fruits and veggies like sweet potatoes, carrots, pumpkin, and mangoes to help protect yourself against dry, dull hair.
10. Shiitake Mushrooms
Shitake mushrooms contain high levels of copper (15), which helps preserve your natural hair colour (16). Low copper intake could be linked to premature graying in people of all hair colors, according to studies.
